I recently dropped my iPhone and am now experiencing the following: on/off switch will not function, and the phone seems to arbitrarily act as though there is headphone plugged in when there isn't. My questions are: is there a place where I can get it repaired for a reasonable price (say $50.00 or less); is it a repair I can make (I can get the headphone/switch assembly for less than $20), and where can I find instuctions for making the repair? Thanks for your help.:frown:

So I am to take it that you are out of warranty and no apple care? And what version phone is it? The original iphone is rather involved when it comes to disassembly. The 3G not so much. But if it is a 3G, it should still be under warranty, and you should take it in for service. The year warranty shouldn't run out until 6/30/09 minimum (that is a year from when they first went on sale)
If it's a V1, make sure that the person you take it to for repair knows what they are doing. The last thing you want is to have a pile of useless electronics, or someone who has it for a week and then tells you they cannot fix it.

Had it for about 1 1/2 years, I guess it's a 2G?

Yes, that would be the original version, and yes you are definitely out of warranty unless you purchased apple care for it.

I would say that the cost of repair would be almost as much as a 3G assuming you are with ATT and eligible for an upgrade. Either that or wait until tomorrow and see what that brings in terms of a new phone release.

Cupertino iPhone Repair does it for $79
I see they do the Power Button Replacement for $79, you may want to check their website.
I tried my own site (SITE REMOVED), charged me $79 for the 3G Touch Screen repair, which included FedEx AIr 2 Day shipping. I had to pay $10 to ship it to them.
The Touch Screen looks Brand New and they say it is Genuine Apple Parts. I could not find any other shop offering Genuine Apple Parts. Also they guarantee their work for 1 year.

This is exactly the reason why I don't bother with the 2G, they look nice, but the cost for repairing doesn't make sense when you could just upgrade to a 3G. Or if your feeling a bit fruity even a 3GS.
2G parts cost a lot of money, you have to remember that the lesser amount of money may mean shoddy workmanship.

Yes I agree 2G is not worth putting any money in
I was reading about 2G repair and (the site I was promoting before I got banned) had a nice explanation on why 2G repair is not such a good idea. SITE REMOVED

The video processing is a strain on the cpu and consumes more battery. There isn't a way around this, except to shut off everything that isn't necessary (gps, wifi, BT, etc) and see if that helps. Also, you might want to try this to improve battery life:
Run the phone down till it shuts itself off. Charge from a wall socket. Reboot the phone and during the course of the day, keep topping off the battery.
Keep the battery topped off for the next couple days and then test again. General battery life should improve. the Lithium polymer batteries perform MUCH better when you keep them topped off, but every month to every other month, you should run it below 20% and then recharge fully to "reset" the meter for accurate battery percentage readings.

I have a different opinion about the iphones as, I have seen that once any part of it gets damage or affected then it takes a lot money to get it done or repair, we buy iphones for its looks and functionality but, when it get affected then hard to repair.
I got the problem in my ipod and I went to the service center for repair but, no use and I have to dump it that is why am little afraid of buying an iphone.

I can understand being a little "gun shy" about the iPhone, but that is why you spend the money for Insurance and/or Apple Care.
Apple care does not cover drop or water damage, but is good to have if you plan on keeping the phone for 1.5-2 years.
Insurance is also expensive, but offers a full range of coverage.
As far as out of warranty repair, there are enough businesses out there that can take care of you without raping your wallet in the process.

"Oh!" What did he mean? In spite of myself, an agreeable warmth spread
over me. I am not a vain man where women are concerned, but I remembered
certain evidences, too lightly thought of at the time, perhaps, but
which certainly seemed to indicate----
My pleasing thoughts were interrupted by the sudden entrance of Miss
Howard. She glanced round hastily to make sure there was no one else
in the room, and quickly produced an old sheet of brown paper. This she
handed to Poirot, murmuring as she did so the cryptic words:
